Weather in the Northern Panhandle is always a bit erratic. But this year’s weather has been so topsy-turvy that it’s downright maddening.

In late December, there was a stretch of almost summerlike weather when I was tempted to pull out my shorts.  Then came the craziness.  Snow, followed by melting, freezing and more snow.  Then the warm weather returned, not just for a day, but for nearly a week.  Warm, sunny, and comfortable–just enough to fool you into thinking that the seasons might actually be changing.  But, no, it wasn’t really spring after all!  Before you knew it, there was more frigid weather right around the corner.  To make things worse, we’ve already had a bout of hail and a thunderstorm that came out of no where and overwhelmed the storm drains.  The result was flash flooding, mud slides and general mayhem on the highways.

As an elder in my church, I do the welcome at the beginning of worship every month or so.  In December, I jokingly announced the coming of spring.  Every time I’ve stepped into the pulpit in 2016 it’s been warm and sunny enough for me to make the same announcement–spring is here!  But within a day or two, my rosy predictions have turned into buckets full of rain, snow, sleet or hail.  My friends at church are blaming me for all of this mixed up weather.  Recently, they’ve begun a Facebook campaign to prevent me from EVER announcing spring again!   I’m glad we can joke about it as we all slosh our way together through this so-called spring.  But I have to believe, sooner or later, spring–real, honest to goodness spring–will actually come!
