You can find peanuts everywhere, from the circus to baseball games and so many other places. We eat them and use them in so many things. Anyone who knows me, knows I love peanut butter, which as we all know is made from peanuts. Needless to say, I was so excited to find out that September 13 is National Peanut Day. In celebration of National Peanut Day, I thought it would be fun to learn more about peanuts. So, here are some interesting and fun facts involving peanuts:
Peanuts are not nuts and are actually legumes, and they grow underground;
There are four types of peanuts: Runner, Virginia, Spanish and Valencia;
Georgia is the largest producer of peanuts in the U.S.;
China is the world’s largest producer of peanuts;
It takes about 540 peanuts to make a 12 oz. jar of peanut butter;
President Thomas Jefferson and President Jimmy Carter were peanut farmers;
About 60% of peanuts are used to make peanut butter;
To be labeled "peanut butter" the FDA requires it must have 90% peanuts;
Peanuts are rich in heart-healthy fats and are a good source of protein; and
According to Guinness World Records, the farthest distance to throw a peanut is 124 ft. 4 in. and is held by Colin Jackson of the UK.
