National Give Something Away Day

National Give Something Away Day

National Give Something Away Day

Many of us have so much to be thankful for, so what better way to show kindness than to share with others who are in need?  National Give Something Away Day is celebrated every year on July 15th.  This special day was created by Linda Eaton Hall-Fulcher, a self-proclaimed giver. The object of this day is to brighten someone’s day by giving them something you no longer need that they can use.  You’ve probably heard the saying, “One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Treasure”.  Well, keep this in mind when you are getting ready to throw out something that you may consider useless or unwanted because it may be valuable or desirable to someone else.

Anyone who has experienced the feeling you get from giving knows that reward is far greater than receiving.  There are so many great organizations right here in the Ohio Valley that help our community by accepting donated items and giving them to those in need.  I serve on the board of one of these great organizations, Appalachian Outreach, Inc. (AOI), so I thought I would share some of the great things about AOI.

Our website provides the following information:

What We Do

Appalachian Outreach, Inc. (AOI) is a nonprofit poverty relief organization that assists people experiencing poverty and disaster in Ohio, Marshall, and Wetzel counties in West Virginia. We believe in the dignity of every person, and we’ve been working to ease the burden of poverty in our state for over 20 years by fulfilling unmet basic human needs. AOI gathers and transports donated materials to poverty- and disaster-stricken residents of its service area. AOI responds to calls from individuals and organizations by donating requested items to those who need them, whether through disaster or because of household circumstances.

Our Mission

AOI exists to ease the burden of poverty for people in need in Ohio, Marshall, and Wetzel counties. We have become proactive in serving the people of these counties by polling the residents for their needs and then packing the delivery truck with the requested items and delivering them.

How You Can Help

AOI depends on the generosity of its supporters to achieve its goals. You can help by participating in our projects, contributing to our fundraisers, becoming a sponsor, making donations, or simply committing to pray for the organization. If you would like to be a part of AOI, please contact us.

If you would like to know even more about AOI, please like our Facebook page at Appalachian Outreach, Inc. WV, and visit our website.  We recently opened our new thrift store located at 3900 Wood Street, Wheeling, WV.  So, please consider thrifting with us or donating any gently used household items to help your neighbors in need.  Thrift store hours are Wednesday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  We also accept item donations on Thursday and Saturday, which allows us to help those in need.  All the proceeds go to ease the burden of poverty in Ohio, Marshall, and Wetzel counties in West Virginia.

We will also be having a Dine to Donate fundraiser on July 19, 2023, from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Undo’s in Benwood, WV, so be sure to mark your calendars.

While July 15th and Give Something Away Day has passed, if you have items you may no longer need, consider donating them to an organization in your community so that they may continue to help those in need.
