First Day of Summer is June 21
While the hot temperatures have certainly made it feel like summer, the official first day of summer is not until June 21. Historically, the first day of summer, also known as the summer solstice, falls on June 20, June 21 or June 22. Why is this?
According to Almanac.com, “In the Northern Hemisphere, the June solstice (aka summer solstice) occurs when the Sun travels along its northernmost path in the sky. This marks the astronomical start of summer in the northern half of the globe. (In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the opposite: the June solstice marks the astronomical start of winter, when the Sun is at its lowest point in the sky.).”
This day in June is also the longest day (most sunlight in a day) of the year! The official time of the summer solstice this year is 5:14 a.m. EDT. Whether you are the early bird that will wake up at this time to celebrate or the night owl that is taking advantage of the extra daylight, we hope you have a great first day of summer and enjoy all the fun that comes with this time of year!
