Georgia Jury Delivers a $2.1 Billion Roundup Verdict
Monsanto parent-company Bayer was hit with a $2.1 billion verdict in a Georgia Court over its Roundup herbicide in the latest in a long-running series of trials across the country. The verdict included $65 million in compensatory damages and $2 billion in punitive damages – marking one of the largest Roundup verdicts yet. Monsanto says it will appeal.
Plaintiff John Barnes sued Monsanto in 2021 alleging damages from his development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which Barnes contends was caused by his exposure to Roundup. Germany-based Bayer, which acquired Monsanto in 2018, continues to dispute claims that Roundup causes cancer, contending that this recent verdict “conflicts with the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence and the consensus of regulatory bodies and their scientific assessments worldwide.” But over 177,000 lawsuits involving the weed killer have been filed to date and Bayer set aside $16 billion to settle cases.
Some studies have found an association between exposure Roundup’s primary ingredient, glyphosate, and the development of cancer, although the EPA has said it is not likely to be carcinogenic to humans when used as directed. This recent decision follows a Roundup $2.25 billion verdict in Philadelphia in January 2024. For its part Monsanto maintains that it is committed to trying cases says it has prevailed in 17 of the last 25 related trials. With that set-up, Roundup litigation is unlikely to be fully resolved anytime soon. But if you believe your health has been compromised from exposure to Roundup or glyphosate, you should contact an experienced law firm right away to explore your options.
