The Junior League of Wheeling

The Junior League of Wheeling is an amazing group of inspiring women that donate their time to better our communities, and I’m so lucky to be part of their team. We focus on the needs of the women and children in our community by organizing projects and programs that help directly benefit them. Some of this year’s specific examples are collecting over 100 hygiene products and donating them to local middle and high school girls, baking 61 dozen cookies for breast cancer awareness, a kids-in-the-kitchen program, making Valentine’s Day cards for local seniors in nursing homes, and packing over 670 weekend food bags for kids with food insecurity.

We recently had our annual dinner to wrap up our 2022-2023 league year and award the Linda Bordas Scholarship! The scholarship is awarded to three local senior girls that demonstrate leadership and volunteerism. Many applicants applied by writing a short prompt about their high school careers in volunteering and community involvement. We were pleased to present these girls with a generous scholarship from Mrs. Bordas.

2023 Winners of the Linda Bordas Scholarship:

  • Kelsey Glessner (Linsly)
  • Meredith Romanek (Wheeling Central)
  • Mya Bogers (Wheeling Park)

The Junior League of Wheeling also celebrates women in the workforce. This year we hosted an inaugural women’s career fair! We set up a resume-building workshop with email review stations and headshots, and we provided childcare to help all that wished to take advantage. Then we coordinated with employers looking to hire so they could attend. The “Next Steps Career Fair for Women” was an educational tool for professional and personal development for many women and our communities. I look forward to growing the program and hosting even more next year!

We are enthusiastic about the next season. We’ll begin around the end of summer. If anyone is interested in joining, we’re always happy to have new faces!
