Fun Facts About Dr. Seuss

My grandchildren’s elementary school is celebrating Dr. Seuss’s March 2nd birthday all week. They love having something different each day such as Wacky Wednesday and Silly Sock Day. Here are some facts about Dr. Seuss that perhaps you didn’t know:

  1. Dr. Seuss was not actually a doctor and Seuss wasn’t his real last name. He was born Theodore Seuss Geisel and also used pen names like T. Seuss and Theo LeSieg and others.
  2. During WWII, Dr. Seuss wanted to join the Navy. Instead, he was asked to make political cartoons and propaganda films and was joined by Chuck   Jones, Mel Blanc and others in creating these films.
  3. Green Eggs and Ham (my grandson’s favorite and first book he read by himself) was Dr. Seuss’ best-selling book. It was written as a result of a       bet that he couldn’t write a book using 50 or fewer distinct words.
  4. Dr. Seuss is responsible for some words in the Oxford English Dictionary such as grinch, nextly and nerd.
  5. Dr. Seuss never had any children of his own and his wife once said he was afraid of them even though he wrote and illustrated 44 children’s    books.
  6. Read Across America is celebrated on Dr. Seuss’s birthday which is a nationwide event that brings attention to the importance and joys of reading.
