Forever Chemical Regulation Is Finally On Its Way

Last month, the Biden administration finalized strict limitations on certain “forever chemicals” in drinking water that will reduce exposure for an estimated 100 million Americans and help prevent thousands of health problems, including cancers. The rule, a first of its kind to limit to toxic perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is comprehensive and will improve the health of so many American communities that have been impacted by widespread environmental contamination with these man-made chemicals that persist practically “forever”.

PFAS chemicals are hazardous because they don’t degrade in the environment, and accumulated, prolonged exposure to these chemicals has been associated with a host of health issues, including liver disease, hormone disruptions, low birth weights and a variety of cancers. Nevertheless, PFAS are, and for decades have been, routinely used in everyday products including nonstick pans, firefighting foam, cosmetics, paper products, waterproof clothing, and a host of others. The EPA estimates the rule will prevent nearly 10,000 deaths over decades and significantly reduce serious illnesses.

Under the new rule, water providers will generally have three years to do testing, and if those test results exceed the limits, providers will have two more years to install treatment systems, according to EPA officials. Funds will be made available to help utilities, including more than $10 billion notorious PFAS manufacturer 3M agreed to pay to settle PFAS litigation and through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. “Reducing PFAS in our drinking water is the most cost-effective way to reduce our exposure,”said Scott Faber, a food and water expert at Environmental Working Group. And while it won’t happen overnight, finally having a rule in place that will make a huge impact in reducing human exposure is exactly the framework we need to combat this insidious health hazard.
