Driving Distracted is Dangerous

Driving Distracted is Dangerous

We have all been faced with distractions while driving, but this can be very dangerous and can lead to motor vehicle accidents.  Driving in general can be dangerous, so it is very important to make sure that we are attentive, in order to keep ourselves, our family, and others on the road safe.  There are so many distractions out there and we often do not think about how they may affect our driving and safety.  The following are just some of the things that can distract drivers on the road:

  1. Talking on the phone (even with a hands-free device);
  2. Texting;
  3. Eating or drinking;
  4. Adjusting the radio, heat, or air;
  5. Talking to other passengers;
  6. Reading the newspaper, book, or maps;
  7. Using a navigation system;
  8. Dealing with children or pets;
  9. Putting on makeup, brushing your hair, shaving, or other grooming; and
  10. Reaching for things in the glove compartment, on the floor, or in the backseat.

When it comes to distractions that we should avoid while driving, there are so many out there.  However, some states have started enacting laws to deter distracted driving like prohibiting the use of handheld devices and texting while driving.  For example, in WV it is prohibited for a driver to text or use a handheld device while driving.  In OH and PA, it is prohibited for a driver to text while driving.  Also, please note that the laws may be different and further restrict the use of these types of devices for teen drivers and intermediate licenses.

Remember driving can be dangerous and distracted driving is even more dangerous.  Make sure when driving that you give your full attention, as this can save lives!
