Do You Remember The 21st Night of September?
The song simply titled “September” is almost inescapable at any joyous occasion -- especially at a wedding. The song is ageless and makes you want to boogie. The song is carefree and is just about living in the moment.
Lyrics from the chorus:
“Hey, hey, hey
Ba-dee-ya, say, do you remember?
Ba-dee-ya, dancin' in September
Ba-dee-ya, never was a cloudy day.”
What does “Ba-dee-ya” mean? Absolutely nothing. It’s just a groove the songwriters said just fit well.
The song is a classic and on September 21st I place this song in heavy rotation in my playlist. The song “September” became Earth, Wind & Fire’s most successful single to date. Sorry to burst your bubble, but September 21st has no actual significance to the band or singers. The songwriter Allee Willis said in an NPR interview she and the leader of Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White, had a process when it came to selecting the 21st.
“We went through all the dates: ‘Do you remember the first, the second, the third, the fourth …‘ and the one that just felt the best was the 21st.”
The song was inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. “September” was deemed an aural treasure worthy of preservation because of its cultural, historical, and aesthetic importance to the nation’s recorded sound heritage.
Hope you remember on September 21st to play this song!
