Why My New Year’s Resolution is to Write More and Post Less

This year, I decided to go about a different type of New Year’s resolution than my typical ‘study more,’ ‘go to bed earlier,’ or ‘eat healthier,’ etc. Instead, I decided to begin writing in a journal instead of posting on my social media accounts. My ideology behind this resolution is that by doing this, I will only be writing for myself and not to impress an audience. I would be bettering myself by becoming more in touch with my own life rather than entertaining others with my life.

As 2017 has only just begun, I have already found improvement in my personal life by doing this. First, I do not feel a pressure to inform others of what I am doing. Oftentimes in the past, I would feel the need to post an event or occurrence in my life for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. in order to give it relevance. Looking back, I realize how ridiculous that is. Secondly, I have been enjoying keeping my life private. Another perk of this resolution is that when I see my friends or family in person, I can verbally communicate what I would have before communicated in a post. Thirdly, it has provided me with a self-awareness I had not before possessed. Additionally, self-reflection is helpful in terms of personal relationships. I have found it truly pleasant not to engage with the charades of social media at this time. I highly recommend and encourage this unique resolution.
