Celebrating Pennsylvania

This Saturday, July 20 is National Pennsylvania Day. Pennsylvania has an important place in American history for its role in the Revolutionary War. It was a central meeting place of the original 13 colonies, and the city of Philadelphia saw the drafting of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. The city served as the first capital of the United States for a decade, and Pennsylvania was the second state to enter the Union in 1787

While the state is important to early American history, Pennsylvania is also important to American pop culture. Things like bubble gum, slinkies and “American Bandstand” were invented in the keystone state, and Pennsylvania gave us pop culture icons like Taylor Swift, Andy Warhol and Tina Fey. Parts of the state serve as inspiration for popular TV shows including “The Office,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “This Is Us.”

While not everyone can go to a historical site like Independence Hall this National Pennsylvania Day, you can still celebrate by eating pierogies or a Philly cheesesteak and quoting “The Office” all day. Maybe use some Heinz Ketchup while you’re at it!
